Arigna Arigna was the branch terminus at Lough Allen of the 3 foot gauge Cavan and Leitrim Railway in northwest Ireland. The railway connected the Midland Great Western Railway mainline at Dromod with the Great Northern Railway of Ireland at Belturbet. The branch to Arigna ran from the railways headquarters at Ballinamore to Arigna mainly alongside the road. The line was originally the brainchild of the Earl of Kington to serve one of the few coalmines in Ireland at Arigna, the coal was the main reason for the lines continuing existence up until closure in 1959.
In recent times the privately owned Cavan & Leitrim Railway has been based out of the Dromod Station, in County Leitrim. Volunteers ran trains for a while before track conditions deteriorated, a transport museum is based there, with trains of every gauge, buses, planes, fire engines and artillery guns from World War I and World War II. |
